Karl Jansky earned his degree in physics from the University of Wisconsin, and spent an extra year as a graduate student, although he never completed his thesis. Instead, he joined the research staff of Bell Telephone Laboratories in 1928. In radio astronomy, the flux unit or Jansky (symbol Jy) is a non-SI unit of electromagnetic flux equivalent to 10 −26 Watts per square meter per Hertz. The unit "Jansky" is named after the pioneering radio astronomer Karl Jansky.. The brightest natural radio sources have flux densities of the order of one (to one hundred) Jansky, which makes the Jansky a suitable unit for radio astronomy. Karl Jansky, pioneer of radio astronomy, was born on the 22nd of this month in 1905 in what was then the Oklahoma Territory. He graduated in 1927 with a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Wisconsin, where his father Cyril was a professor of electrical engineering.

Karl Jansky built an antenna that could be rotated on the wheels of a Model T so that he could track down sources of radio static, inventing radio astronomy in the process. Much of the outdoor footage for the 1997 film Contact was shot on-site at the Very Large Array observatory in New Mexico. Karl Jansky, an American engineer, was born Oct. 22, 1905.

Karl Guthe Jansky (22. října 1905 – 14. února 1950) byl americký fyzik a radioinženýr, který v srpnu 1931 objevil rádiové vlny vycházející z Mléčné dráhy.Je považován za jednu ze zakládajících postav radioastronomie.Byl českého původu (děd Jan Jánský imigroval v 19. století do USA, přičemž si vzal Kateřinu Kouklovou z Řemešína a narodil se roku 1842 v Jansky, Karl (1905-1950) American radio engineer who was employed at the Holmdel Field Station of Bell Labs to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio for the shortwave trans-Atlantic radiotelephone. Using a rotating shortwave receiver array (a Bruce array) operating at 20.5 MHz and 45 KHz, he discovered extraterrestrial radio "noise" in 1932-1933.
